We look a lot stronger with Noble, Song and Koyate in the middle., A real step up since Diame departed.

Rubbish

Diame started over 40 league games for us in the centre of midfield. In some of those he played very well, in a lot more, he didn't. And in many of the latter, he gave the ball away regularly, hence being shuffled to wing where he was less dangerous to us.

Re: No Diame thread ?
If Diame had been allowed to play in the center and not wide then we might have got the best out of him.

BFS screwed up by picking Nolan and Noble in these positions.

I think that very much depends on the stat and how it is used. It seems to me that stats only get useful in combination, and there's a whole industry growing out of the need to work out what formula works best for evaluating players.

Certainly stats seem to be at the heart of our club's transfer policy. In the Summer we bought the most prolific crosser in the championship, the most prolific tackler from the same league, and the top scorers from Ligue 2, and both the Mexican and Argentine top divisions.

His goal against Arsenal shouldn't have stood, it was a foul.

He was brilliant for us when he signed, then quickly turned into a lazy prima donna cunt.

The same will happen again - if he was that good, a decent side would have came in for him.

Re: No Diame thread ?
Stats are mildly interesting at best but fairly meaningless in judging the effectiveness of a footballer as they ignore the context of the 'measured' event. Plus I am sceptical as to how consistent or accurate those measures are as they must rely on the interpretation of the data gatherer to quite an extent.

Re: No Diame thread ?
Stats are useful if you can successfully distill from them the effectiveness of a player's performance. Trouble is that people use them to bludgeon one another into submission.

Re: No Diame thread ?
There have been numerous threads about Diame. We all know that he can look great at times but ultimately lasts 60mins and goes missing far too often. He's also never shown real commitment to a club and isn't willing to put in the work to improve. As such he will struggle to attract any top clubs or get regular PL once the honeymoon period is over.
Good signing for Hull pernaps but I'm happier with the players we have and expect them to get better whilst Diame won't.

Re: No Diame thread ?
Stats get a good kicking on here and elsewhere most of the time, and they are frequently mis-used, but they can be provide useful counter-intuitive facts.

My theory is that Diame is known for losing the ball because when he springs forward with it so promisingly and nothing comes of it it is extra frustrating to watch. I think if he'd just lost the ball in a less conspicuous way, as most players do, then he wouldn't have the reputation :).

But he does lose the ball a fair bit, regardless :).

Re: No Diame thread ?
This isn't Championship Manager. I don't need stats to tell me what I already know: that Diame is an average PL player.

But he is doing well at the moment so good luck to him. We are a better team now and I wouldn't want him back.

Maybe. I'm a Zarate fan btw, he would be in my first 11.

Agreed that with any player there's often more of a story than that. Both with Wigan and with us I don't think you can explain what happened to Diame in soundbites. I think a key issue is that Diame looked and performed best when we played with an attacking outlook.

"Reflects pretty badly on Zarate that if you consider that he's not even playing full games for us (ie there's less time for him to be dispossessed!). "

There's less time for him to be dispossessed

Extrapolation

Maybe as he gets more minutes, he wouldn't be dispossessed as much?

But that would be an extrapolation

Re: No Diame thread ?
>>> Amazing, you're extrapolating something from him because he hasn't played the minutes

Well no, I'm just quoting the stats on the whoscored site, which uses Opta. Obviously the more stats you have, the more reliable the conclusion you can draw. But Zarate has been dispossessed 12 times in 284 minutes, Diame 12 times in 440. Speaks for itself.

(I don't think dispossession is a very useful stat at all BTW. For reasons I explained earlier in the thread)

By successful dribbles does picking the ball up in centre circle running with the ball 5 yards sideways and 5 yards backwards then passing 5 yards backwards count??

If so then I can see why Noble is UP THERE.

It's the pattern with most players imo, especially attacking ones. I've seen the argument made that attacking players should move clubs more frequently to combat this.

Re: No Diame thread ?
Who cares about the odd dribbling stat?

The FACT of the matter is, we look a much better TEAM without him. That is the be all and end all.

Good player, who will score goals in the position Hull are playing him in, but we have Downing in that role, who has given us a completely different dynamic as an attacking team. He looks sublime this season, and give me his passing, through balls, ball retention, dribbling, creativity over anything that Diame gives you, regardless of what the stats say.
